Burger Bun Alternatives

So all this March Madness has gotten you in the mood for a burger, huh? No buns allowed! Even though there are some paleo burger bun recipes out there I don’t think they add nutritional value. It’s simply a replacement to ‘act’ like a floury bun and it requires a lot of nut flours and stuff we’re supposed to keep in moderation.

Here are some alternative options that can be fun and different for your next burger night!

Lettuce Wrap

Also known as “in the grass”. Peel off 4-6 leaves of iceburg lettuce. Wrap around the cooked burger patty and all toppings. This kind of lettuce add a crunch and holds the juicy burger in place pretty well.

Spaghetti Squash Buns

A Mangia Paleo original recipe and one of my favorite alternatives to sandwich bread or burger buns. See the recipe here.

Sweet Potato Slices

Directions: Choose the fattest sweet potato you can find! Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2 inch slices. You may either cut them longways or across, whichever will give you a wider slice to cover the burger. Lightly coat with olive oil and salt & pepper. Roast in oven at 350 for 20 minutes then flip and cook another 10 minutes or until tender.

Egg Wrap

Directions: Scramble 3 eggs with 2 tsp coconut flour and salt & pepper to taste. Add to greased small stove-top pan on medium heat. Cover and let it cook through, flipping once if necessary. Treat this like a very thin omelet.
